Hoping Rory will have some time / energy to catch up with posts of her own, since our days tend to be SO different.
Today I took the two big girls to an all-day CERT training. (CERT = Community Emergency Response Team) This group is also known as "Citizen Corps" and is loosely affiliated with FEMA in terms of our role and even some funding. New members receive training in search & rescue, basic first aid, crowd control, medical triage, and lots of other skills that might come in handy during a natural or man-made disaster. We do periodic drills and have ongoing training to keep our skills "fresh" ... better than having lots of ACTUAL disasters on which to practice. Anyway today was ICS, or Incident Command System. That's the organizational structure that all responders (FEMA, police, fire, CERT, etc) use so when we're called on to help in a disaster, everybody "speaks the same language." We did two of the courses, which took all day, but passed with flying colors.
Since this had been scheduled for some time, and is a required training, we were grateful that someone from the church volunteered to come and stay with the other four kids ALL DAY. Sounds like they had quite a time, and I'm guessing the kids really wore her out. So grateful to Sister T for allowing the three of us to get this training done.
For dinner the girls and I attended the yearly CERT banquet and awards ceremony. Everyone who had responded to a deployment request got certificates and pins ("bling"). It was a nice time.
Tonight we're trying to get some more homework done, fighting through the "distractions" (wink, wink, Ceana). Glad the girls are still willing to work on things even after such a long day already.
Sorry no Secret Santa update ... since several of us were gone for so long we didn't open today's package. Means two for tomorrow!
