A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST II

We love watermelon at our house. We love it so much that we thought that we might attempt to grow them in our own garden this year. Little did we know how much we would NOT be at home to care for our little garden and all its contents. Without being able to be home to give the garden the care it really needed, our little watermelons didnt get all the water they needed to grow big and strong. Instead we had little golf ball-softball size watermelon!
The kids had a really hard time leaving them in the garden to grow after everything else had been brought in, so we went ahead and picked them, even if we knew that we would just have a taste (this should be the name of our garden this year - The Tasting Garden - we got little bits of this and that with everything)

This first pict is when our cute little watermelons were still trying to grow - it is about the size of a baseball....
By the time we brought the few watermelons in that had grown, the biggest one was really not much bigger than a softball...

We were not sure if we would even get any that were really ripe or would be able to be eaten. All of the kids were thrilled when Ceana cut into this one and found a beautiful red center. They couldnt wait to taste it!

Here it is - our one and only that was just perfect. It gave everyone a yummy taste of crunchy, sweetness, just for one meal. It was sure worth it to give it a try, and I know that we will for sure try to plant them again next year too. One of these days we will see if we can get bigger ones. For now, though, this little one was just right
